Visiting First Church
Visiting a church for the first time can be intimidating, it takes courage to visit a new place especially if you do not know what to expect. We hope that you will find this website helpful. Here are a few questions you may have prior to your visit. Please feel free to email us at FirstUMC@firstunitedmethodist.com or call the church office (304-522-0357) if you have further questions. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Our Worship Services
There are two worship services on Sunday morning:
8:45 - First Light Contemporary service in the Fellowship Hall
10:45 - Traditional Worship service in the Sanctuary
Sunday school for all ages is at 9:30
First Light Worship, at 8:45 is an informal, contemporary style of service. Worshippers sit at tables in the Fellowship Hall. Coffee is provided and many worshippers bring their breakfast with them to the service. A praise team provides the music. Holy Communion is celebrated each week. Pastor Steve Hensley is the worship leader. The service usually ends by 9:30 so that you may attend a Sunday school class.
Worship in the Sanctuary begins at 10:45. This service uses a printed bulletin. Choirs offer anthems and lead the congregation in hymn singing, accompanied by our Moeller pipe organ played by Sandra Folsom. A time for children is included in each service. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. Services usually end by noon. Pastor Mark Conner has primary leadership of the service.
Our Korean Congregation meets every Sunday at 12:00 in Room 201 in the education building. Rev. Teresa Yeon Choi leads the worship. The service is in Korean.
Where do I park?
We have two parking lots: one is located off 5th Avenue on the west side of the church and one on the east side, just off 12th Street. The 12th Street parking lot is designated handicap parking only on Sunday mornings.
Which door do I enter?
If you are attending the 8:45 service, enter through the door closest to the alley in the 5th Avenue parking lot or the 12th Street handicap door. Both these doors are in the education wing.
If you are attending the 10:45 service, you can use either of the above mentioned doors plus the front door on the west side of the main church building (the portico door) that is accessed via a covered walkway off of 5th Avenue. There will be a sign that that entrance.
Handicap Entrance: The 12th Street entrance is handicap accessible. This entrance leads to the elevator and a handicap restroom. The elevator provides access to the Sunday school rooms and Sanctuary.
Where do young children go during the services?
Children of all ages are welcome in both of our services. We have staffed nurseries for infants and children through age 5 at both services. The nurseries are located on the first floor of the education building across from the Fellowship Hall. We have an electronic paging system in place so parents can be contacted during the service should the need arise.
What do I wear?
You are invited to come dressed however you are most comfortable. Our 8:45 service is more casual than our 10:45 service.
