History

In 1872, only one year after the founding of the city of Huntington, Alonzo Palmer organized a Sunday school in his carpenter shop on Third Avenue near Eighth Street.  The members of that Sunday school class eventually became the founders of the First United Methodist Church.

Since then the congregation has occupied three buildings.  The present church, with its massive stone towers and beautiful stained glass, was built in 1912; the first service was held on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1914.  The education wing was dedicated on January 31, 1960.

The church with the gray stone towers is a landmark in downtown Huntington, but the building is not First United Methodist – the people are.  We are active volunteers in mission throughout the community and beyond.  You will find that there are a wealth of opportunities to worship, learn, share and be involved in the mission of Christ’s Church at First United Methodist.
